Crohn’s, Colitis, Pregnancy and God’s Miracles
With an 18 year history of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, I’d been on medications for a long time. I’ve taken Prednisone, Pentasa, Asacol, Sulfasalazine, 5-ASA, Cipro, Keflex, Flagyl, 6-MP (6 mercaptopurine) and lastly, Remicade infusions. There’s been neuropathy in both legs from drugs and risk to the liver and other dangerous side effects to the body over time. There’s been abscesses and fistulas. They’ve done hyperalimentation with direct IV tubes, had multiple hospital visits, liquid diets, low residue diets, home IV units while NPO (no food by mouth). Finally there was bowel resection surgery, but the disease came back 2 years later in another part of the colon.
I had also tried many natural modalities, aloe vera juice, too many herbs, vitamins and minerals to list here. No matter what I took or what diet I tried, it always came back in some form and I never stayed in remission without drugs for long. I wanted to let you know as much as I could think of, because many people nowadays have been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. You probably know someone who has it. I had tried as many natural things as I could. It gets depressing when you try everything you can think of and read about and you still do not get well, many dollars and days later.
In July of 1999, my mother read about colostrum in the Vital Health News and how it could help Crohn’s disease. I had my reservations, but I did agree to try it. I started taking the maintenance dose of 4 capsules per day. I had been taking the colostrum for about 4 months, in November of 1999, when I made a life-changing decision and had a very big surprise.
I have believed in God for a long time, but had questions about being a Christian. One day in early November I stopped in at the church we had been attending recently and had a discussion with the Pastor. My life-changing decision was that for the first time in my life, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. As I left the church, I prayed for a sign to re-assure me that He was really in my life. Oddly enough, on my way home, I had a strong gut feeling to pick up a pregnancy test. We were not trying to conceive at this point, due to the medications I was on for Crohn’s and colitis. But the thought that kept occurring to me was that if I was pregnant, it would be better to know early, for the health of the baby. So I picked up the test and waited until the next morning to take the at-home pregnancy test.
The next morning I took the test. I was not really expecting it to be positive. I was not “late” and we were not trying to get pregnant. We were, ironically, trying to avoid pregnancy at that point in time, due to the medications I was on. Imagine the surprise when it was positive! I was very happy and surprised and shocked all rolled into one. I was about 2 weeks along in the pregnancy and was on very strong medications, Cipro and Flagyl. Both are considered to be at least a “C” category drug and not recommended for pregnancy, due to severe problems they could cause. My phone call to the gastoenterologist confirmed that I needed to go off of my medications right then and they wished me “good luck”. My next thought was, I am going through this pregnancy on Colostrum and Prayer. I immediately increased my colostrum capsules up to at least 8 capsules a day. I used the liquid colostrum at times also. In addition, I would make protein drinks with the colostrum powder.
With the pregnancy being such a wonderful surprise and then having to go off my medications so suddenly, I was putting my faith in God and into His way for healing, which for me was with the colostrum. I recalled my prayer just the day before I found out I was pregnant, my quick prayer of asking for a sign that Jesus was truly in my life. Well, I truly believe I got my sign! There is no doubt in my mind that this is by no means a coincidence. Becoming pregnant in and of itself is a miracle of life that God gives us. I believe God knew I was getting healthy enough to have this child, even though I did not know it. He gave me my sign that I accepted His Son and He is in my life to be there for me. I took the leap of faith and trusted in Him to keep my body and the baby healthy. The Lord did that, in helping to heal my body with colostrum’s miraculous life-giving properties.
My pregnancy went very well. My bowels were fine throughout the pregnancy. I did not have any episodes or attacks of the Crohn’s disease or the colitis. As always, there are many visits to the Doctor’s office during the pregnancy to check on the baby’s progress. At each visit they always ask what you are currently taking for medications or supplements. I told them at each visit how many thousands of milligrams of colostrum I was taking. They were completely supportive of it and told me it was fine.
In July of 2000, one week before my technical “due date”, Zachary arrived. 8 pounds, 9 ounces. Thank goodness he was a week early! He delivered just fine, he nursed right away and got his colostrum for the first couple of nursings before my milk came in. I was very glad to be able to pass along my strengthened immunities to him. In the last 2 years and 3 months since his birth and while nursing (still ongoing), I have continued on colostrum. I use the capsules and the liquid and also make protein drinks with the powder. I have not been on any maintenance doses of any other pharmaceuticals. I am very glad to report that I have an incredibly wonderful and healthy blessing, Zachary! I thank God for my health and for His creation of colostrum to be available, to be life’s first food. Colostrum truly is Mother Nature’s healing miracle!
